The impact of the aviation industry, what are the solutions?

Jet fuel is one of the heaviest fossil fuels in use, releasing carbon dioxide, water vapour, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, lead, and black carbon high in the atmosphere when burned by aircraft engines. While contributing substantially to climate change, these engines also emit heat and noise, and the aviation industry at large has demonstrated unprecedented growth in the last few decades with little sign of declining any time soon. Addressing climate change is a complex issue, one that will need an individual solution for the multitude of contributors to this pervasive problem, and one of the heaviest sources of atmospheric pollution in the transport sector is aviation. As society sees multiple greener alternatives cropping up in the car industry, what are the possible greener aviation alternatives?

Currently not much is being done to curb the massive impact of aviation on the planet’s atmosphere, despite there being an 83% increase in the level of the aviation industry's carbon dioxide emissions due to industry growth since 1990. The amount of particulates expelled from combusting jet fuel contributes massively to global warming and global dimming, but the aviation industry currently escapes regulation or emissions targets set by the Kyoto Protocol, as only domestic flights currently count toward a country's targets. It is clear then that air travel has to go in the long term, and while innovations in battery or alternative fuel technology remain a long way off, large high speed rail connections such as those proposed in Xi Jinping’s One Belt One Road Initiative seem to be the only realistic prospect moving forward. The rail and maritime transport and shipping industries are already much more efficient by shipping weight and greener high speed options seem a reality in the medium term.
