His lack of impartiality

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow will mostly be remembered for his lack of impartiality that led to the loss of his House of Lords nomination. He has undoubtedly pressured and influenced parliament during one of the most important issues of this generation, Brexit, a role that some see is complicating the matter, with Bercow's obvious Brexit scepticism seen as an overstep of his position. Likewise voicing concerns around hosting Donald Trump was seen by many as a step too far for a House of Commons Speaker, Speakers are not elected to voice their opinions. However as a result his legacy may prove a divisive one, as many see his lack of impartiality as setting an important example that needs to be carried forward, in such incredibly discordant times some believe the house needs a bold Speaker, someone to voice some stable opinions, a voice of reason.

A bully

John Bercow will be remembered as a bold symbol of the UK’s animated parliament environment but this hides a darker side that some MP’s have repeatedly attempted to bring to light. In 2018 allegations came forward when Bercow’s former staff accused him of bullying, causing Bercow to establish an independent body to investigate this and various other accusations of widespread bullying and sexual harassment in parliament. However three MPs resigned from this group citing Bercow’s mismanagement of bullying and sexual harassment in Parliament, and likewise fresh allegations have emerged of bullying in January 2020 as other staff that have worked with Bercow have come forward. John Bercow may be remembered fondly as one of the longest speakers in the House of Commons but this memory may need to be re-evaluated somewhat in the near future.

An unprecedentedly popular Speaker, despite controversy

During his long term as the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow has become the first speaker to earn a triple nomination and serve under four prime ministers, making him the longest serving speaker in nearly a century. He has often conducted the house with humour and has been relatively popular in his time in office despite some controversy. Having entered politics as a far-right Conservative, Bercow’s outlook slowly softened in time, but to some this slow change in political outlook has been controversial, as has his recent outspoken nature, increasingly using his position to voice his opinions and speak out about negative aspects of British politics. His longevity and flair, coupled with his unique delivery of the term “order”, will likely linger in the House of Commons for quite some time.
