What is behind the socially distanced protests in Israel?

Thousands of demonstrators have taken part in protests in Israel in 2020 despite the country being in the midst of pandemic lockdown. Protest organisers are doing their best to adhere to the country’s strict social distancing measures, employing methods such as marking two meter zoning to help protesters maintain safe distancing from each other. What makes this protest different from anti-lockdown protests that have occurred elsewhere in the world? Why are there protests in Israel despite social distancing? www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200421_04

The making of multilayered humanitarian disaster

These protests were spurred on by the urgent need to stop the multilayered humanitarian disaster the Israeli government's plans will lead to, this aggressive annexation policy during a global pandemic will be a catastrophe. Many protestors also fear the possible escalation of tensions with neighbouring countries that the annexation of the Jordan Valley could lead to, Jordan has already warned of the damage this would cause to regional peace. The social distancing protests are not the only stand against Israel’s conduct amidst the pandemic, with over 250 writers & artists urging Israel to end its “siege” of Gaza, which faces devastation by the pandemic if the countries harsh restrictions on food, water and electricity are not lifted to allow normal functioning of the region's hospitals. Protests such are this are happening as this shocking use of political and health crises is not being treated as the issue it ought to, it is not being denounced as strongly as the Crimean annexation or China’s detention of Uighurs for example.

Gantz is killing the opposition in Israel

Gantz’s turn around on working with Netanyahu has essentially allowed another Netanyahu government to come to power despite involvement in numerous scandals and a subsequent drop in popularity leading to numerous failures to form a government. Simultaneously Gantz has also undermined governmental opposition in terms of policy, with Gantz showing his willingness for concession on Netanyahu’s plan to annex the West Bank, something that would decimate the peace process and has in effect decimated his position as a sufficient opposition. Many who hoped Gantz would help unseat Netanyahu are now watching him assist him in holding on to power, while Netanyahu’s social media posts of his followers calling him “Bibi, King of Israel” is rubbing salt in the wounds of those who oppose him. This has caused protests despite the pandemic...

Netanyahu’s corruption charges

The protests occurring in Israel are markedly different from the anti-lockdown protests that occurred in the United States, Germany and other countries; Israeli protesters are demonstrating against the criminal capture of the Israeli government. Netanyahu was indicted on corruption charges in November 2019, including fraud, bribery and breach of trust. After hearing arguments to bar Netanyahu from forming a government, the Israeli High Court decided in May 2020 that scandal laden Netanyahu can form a unity government and continue as the country's prime minister. Protests are likely to continue despite social distancing measures, as the formation of this coalition remains an unpopular surprise with Netanyahu remaining in power despite having criminal charges filed against him.
