What is behind the socially distanced protests in Israel?

Thousands of demonstrators have taken part in protests in Israel in 2020 despite the country being in the midst of pandemic lockdown. Protest organisers are doing their best to adhere to the country’s strict social distancing measures, employing methods such as marking two meter zoning to help protesters maintain safe distancing from each other. What makes this protest different from anti-lockdown protests that have occurred elsewhere in the world? Why are there protests in Israel despite social distancing? www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200421_04

Netanyahu’s corruption charges

The protests occurring in Israel are markedly different from the anti-lockdown protests that occurred in the United States, Germany and other countries; Israeli protesters are demonstrating against the criminal capture of the Israeli government. Netanyahu was indicted on corruption charges in November 2019, including fraud, bribery and breach of trust. After hearing arguments to bar Netanyahu from forming a government, the Israeli High Court decided in May 2020 that scandal laden Netanyahu can form a unity government and continue as the country's prime minister. Protests are likely to continue despite social distancing measures, as the formation of this coalition remains an unpopular surprise with Netanyahu remaining in power despite having criminal charges filed against him.
