What is causing the global semiconductor shortage?

Far from just the global pandemic, 2020 saw the start of a massive semiconductor shortage that has lasted into 2021. Supply of semiconductors and related appliances have massive reduced as demand has skyrocketed reaching crisis proportions. Hundreds of industries dealing with electrical devices have been hindered by the unavailability of semiconductors as order backlogs and waiting lists look set to continue well into the future. But, what is causing the global semiconductor shortage? What could be done to address these issues?

COVID

Another global symptom of the COVID-19 pandemic is the shortage of semiconductors, with every sector of global semiconductor supply chains stretched to their limits as production lagged severely behind demand. As large sections of the global population were forced to work from home, study from home, or simply stay home for prolonged periods in 2020-2021, upgrading tech to maintain connectivity became a matter of increasing importance. This one massive change led to a monumental surge in global demand for electrical devices as computers, phones, webcams, and monitors enjoyed unprecedented sales, with computer sales alone up 26.1% by the end of 2020 [1].

Over-consolidation of the semiconductor industry

Semiconductor supply chains are overwhelmingly complex but one company sits on the top of what is one of the most heavily consolidated industries in the world and that company is Taiwan's Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, or TSMC. Semiconductor foundries are too complex to be startup opportunities and TSMC's monopoly means there are few options when demand reaches such high levels as it has over 2020 and 2021. Its should be of the utmost importance that foundry competition is encouraged and more semiconductor foundries are established moving forward as this industry is so ubiquitous for modern technology, something that is especially important in this current transitory economic and technological era.
