Why has Steven Crowder been demonetized by YouTube so often?

Steven Crowder is a Youtuber who creates conservative political commentary videos; his channel has been de-monetized numerous times and even suspended, both on YouTube and other social media platforms. Crowder has cried censorship from the tech platform and announced he has filed a lawsuit against Facebook for similar suspensions in February 2021, but others have criticised YouTube for being too lenient and not banning his channel outright. Why has Steven Crowder been demonetized by YouTube so often? Has YouTube been too lenient with him? Or are rightwing voices being censored on their platform?

Because he is a racist cyberbully

Steven Crowder has had a string of demonetisations on the YouTube platform, most famously in 2019 for using racist and homophobic slurs targeting Carlos Maza, a Vox Journalist, who noted that Crowder's fans harassed and doxxed him following the video. This unprofessional behaviour has continued in subsequent years, leading to a second strike toward a full ban from the platform following a video in which Crowder was "revelling in or mocking" the police shooting of 16 year old Ma'Khia Bryant. Even the skits he is known for are more about his ego than the issues, sitting down with someone whose views you don't share should be a good constructive experience, but Crowder prepares for these interactions and memorises a string of facts to back up his view and then shouts over his unprepared counterpart in a string of intellectual "gotcha" moments. He contributes nothing to online communication, but continues to muddy the waters with racism and homophobia while attacking public figures whose opinion he doesn't share; he will likely be banned from YouTube for his unprofessional behaviour, on an inclusive platform.

Targeted censorship of the right

Steven Crowder has been singled out by platforms such as YouTube and Facebook for being an outspoken voice on the right, and is just one of many conservative voices that have been remonetized or banned online. While these tech companies claim that they provide open platforms for people to share ideas, conservative voices are all too often censored and suppressed by Silicon Valley companies that have clear liberal biases, the Internet was designed to be, and should remain, an open marketplace of ideas. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has put his support behind Crowder, calling out YouTube for demonetising him as an effort to silence voices they don't agree with, and he pointed out online comments made by TBS's Samantha Bee and actor Jim Carrey that that are much worse than anything Crowder has said and have not been removed from their platform.
